The purpose of this meeting was to exchange views among international graduates from South Asia, especially from Pakistan and India, and to obtain sound career advice from senior colleagues. This meeting was an informal gathering and was attended by about 25 consultants, SAS and trainee doctors in ENT. There was a separate social programme for spouses and children. There were three invited speakers.
The meeting was opened by a very interesting talk on ‘How to Get your Papers Published’ by Mr Ray Clarke, ENT Consultant at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool. Being the Editor of ENT News, Mr Clarke gave some very useful tips on how to write papers and how to get them published.
The next talk was given by Mr Musheer Hussain, ENT Consultant at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee, on ‘Enhancing Scholarly Activity in Otolaryngology’ Delegates were told how to look around for ideas and set up research projects. The need for scholarship and the role of a mentor was emphasised.
The final talk was on a very informative topic for trainees, ‘How to prepare your CV’ by Mr Shakeel Saeed, ENT Consultant, Skull Base Surgeon, Hope Hospital, Salford and Manchester Royal Infirmary. Mr Saeed deals with lots of CVs as the Programme Director in the North West Region and gave valuable advice on how to present a CV for trainee posts in Otolaryngology. The talks were followed by a lively question and answer session. Mr Haroon Z Khan gave the vote of thanks.
Delegates then partook in a delicious Indian meal with mouth-watering starters and Raas Malai for dessert.
I thought this Inaugural Meeting was excellent. There are plans to hold future meetings on similar lines to cover topics of interest. The venue will move around, and those interested in future meetings may email: ent_society@yahoo.co.uk
