The 10th meeting of International Medical graduates (IMGs) took place on 22nd May 2010 at Royal Al Faisal Restaurant, Birmingham.

Mr. Ijaz Ahmed, Consultant Head/Neck Surgeon, (Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham), welcomed the delegates and introduced the programme for the evening.

Mr.Haroon Khan explained the aims of the Society to new members.

Dr. Cathal Coyle PhD, Liaisons Officer, (RB Healthcare UK Ltd.) was the first speaker whose topic was: Reflux and beyond; is acid the only problem? The next speaker was Dr.Adel Mansur, Consultant Physician, (Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham) who presented a talk on Vocal cord dysfunction- Diagnosis & Management focusing on unusual presentations’ of patients’ to A&E with severe respiratory distress.

Mr.Junaid Hanif, Consultant ENT Surgeon (Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Honorary Senior Lecturer UEA Medical School), presented delegates with highlights of the recent Ear Surgery Charity Project in Mirpurkhas, Pakistan which took place in November 2009.

Aims of the charity work included crucial training of local doctors, reducing inequalities in healthcare and also providing a unique learning experience for the UK team of visiting surgeons. Such experiences, Mr Hanif explained were of great benefit to the UK team of surgeons in developing their personal and professional development and thereby, ensuring they were better equipped to deal with the diverse UK population base and changing face of the NHS.

Furthermore, it was hoped that experience gained in organising such projects would assist in ensuring further charity camps in the future and provision of essential equipment.

The meeting concluded with a lavish meal enjoyed by all. The next meeting is planned for summer 2010.
