At the Meeting of International / UK Medical Graduates in ENT, delegates were treated to enlightening presentations from leading oculoplastic and maxillo-facial surgeons.

Ahmed Sadiq, Consultant at the Manchester Eye Hospital, spoke about oculoplastic surgery in facial palsy. The aims of this treatment are to preserve vision, improve cosmesis and reduce epiphora. Mr Sadiq explained that in upper eyelid surgery the aim is to cover more of the cornea and allow better closure of the eye, and in lower lower eyelid surgery the aims are to lift and improve its position, reduce watering and increase the closure of the eye. Mr Sadiq also discussed lateral canthopexy and the difficulties of lifting the central part of the eyelid, which may require a larger operation. He concluded by talking about an alternative to reanimation surgery in the form of treatment with botulinum toxin A (BTXA), which particularly helps those with partial recovery of lower facial movement.

Mr Haroon Yusuf, Consultant Maxillo-Facial Surgeon from the Pennine NHS Trust, spoke about various oral lesions, including erythroplakia and squamous cell carcinoma (epidermoid carcinoma). Treatment consists of surgical excision and possible irradiation and chemotherapy as adjunctive.

Anwar Moin Khan from Cardiff spoke about the forthcoming 4th Middle Ear Surgery Camp and Haroon Khan gave an update on the Cochlear Implant Project.
