16th Meeting of International / UK Medical Graduates (IMGs) in ENT

The 16th Meeting of international/UK Medical Graduatesin ENT. opened with Mr ljaz Ahmad, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, introducing the speakers for the evening. The guest speaker was Mr Shaz Ahmed-Consultant ENT and Skull Base Surgeon, Queen Elizabeth. Hospital NHS Trust, Birmingham, who spoke on 'Endoscopic Approaches to the Skull Base'. He presented a variety of cases, including intra-operative videos demonstrating surgery to excise meningiomas in the olfactory groove, other tumours of the sella, clivus and orbits, and described various vascularised pedicled flaps to reconstruct the large skull base defects. His talk concluded with numerous questions from the floor focusing on the outcomes in this patient group when compared to the alternative, which is often a craniotomy and a much longer stay in hospital. Mr Anwar Moin Khan from Cardiff spoke about the forthcoming 5th International Middle Ear Surgery Camp to be held in November 2013 at Indus Charity Hospital, Karachi and Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas, Sindh, Pakistan. Mr Haroon Khan gave an update on the Cochlear Implant Project in Pakistan. He spoke about how the first Free Public Sector programme was set up and the progress so far. Two implants were performed in December 2012 on children whose parents came from a very poor background. More were planned for the summer and the progress of the two operated patients is satisfactory. He also talked about the UK registered charity IMRA which is involved in these projects.
