Mr. Saleem Yousef Consultant ENT Surgeon St. Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals, introduced the speakers for the evening.
The guest speaker Mr N Ahmad FRCSEd (ORL-HNS) MSc DOHNS BSc (Hons) MBChB Consultant in Otology, Neurotology & Skull Base Surgery, James Cook University Hospital, Middlesborough spoke on “Cochlear Implantation.” He discussed in detail the selection criteria, the investigations necessary and the role of various disciplines. He also described steps of surgery and post-op rehabilitation process. He showed videos of the surgical procedure and the audience had opportunity to ask him questions.
Mr.Haroon Khan from Manchester spoke about the forthcoming 1st International Middle Ear Surgery Camp to be held from 24-26 November 2013 in Sahiwal,Punjab and the 3rd Ear Surgery camp at Indus Hospital, Karachi from 25-30 November as well as the 5th Ear Surgery camp Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas, Sindh from 1-5 December 2013.Team of 7 U.K. Surgeons and 3 Local Surgeons will take part in these Free Ear Surgery camps.
He gave an update on Cochlear Implant Project in Pakistan and how the first Free Public Sector programme was set up. 2 Implants were done in Dec 2012 and 2 in July 2013 on children whose parents came from a very poor background. IMRA a U.K. Charity played a key role in these projects.
