9th Meeting of International / UK Medical Graduates in ENT

Venue: Karims Restaurant, Manchester  Date: 10/10/09. Report by: Sadie Khwaja, SpR, Manchester & Maha Khan, FY2 Lancashire, UK.

Mr MH Khan (Honorary Chair) welcomed the delegates to the 9th meeting of International Medical Graduates (IMGs). Mr Yousef Saleem (Consultant ENT Surgeon, Merseyside, UK), gave an update on, management of chronic rhinosinusitis. Management of CRS is mainly medical; surrgery is reserved only for those who do not respond to medical treatment.

Recently balloon sinuplasty has shown to be effective in the surgical treatment of catients with CRS without polyps. The long term results seem encouraging. Mr Nasir Kazmi (Consultant ENT Surgeon, Victoria Hospital Blackpool, UK) spoke on Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). Endoscopic DCR is a ‘minimaIIy' invasive procedure performed by ophthalmologists and otorhinolaryngologists and is used to treat patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. There are certain advantages of endoscopic DCR: there is no external scar; it preserves the lacrimal pump system and any intranasal pathology that might have caused failure of the first procedure can be addressed.

The main disadvantage is that endonasal DCR is a fairly new procedure; long term results are unknown. A smaller rhinostomy is performed in endonasal DCR an in the external procedure. There are certain complications to an endoscopic XR. Some unique to the endoscopic approach and some shared by the external aporoach. The external DCR is certainly still thought of as the gold standard with success rate of approximately 91%. Reported success rates for endoscopic DCR are between 75% and 97% and is ideally suited for revision procedures.

Mr Anwar Moin Khan (ENT Surgeon, Cardiff, UK) presented the prospective ear surgery project in Pakistan in November 2009. Mr Faiz Tanweer (Norwich, UK) spoke about the viva sessions held in London, Birmingham and Manchester for candidates sitting the exit exams. The meeting concluded with a lavish meal enjoyed by all. The next meeting is planned for summer 2010.
