What is Head and Neck surgery?

Head and neck surgery covers a wide range of conditions affecting the throat, neck, salivary glands and other areas, including cancer.

Dr Ijaz Ahmad, IMRA Trustee and Director of IMRA’s Head & Neck Programme, talks about the programme and its work.

"Thyroid surgery is an important part of our program. We treat patients with thyroid swellings, nodules, goitre, and thyroid cancer."

"Through IMRA, we aim to bring specialist expertise and training, and high-quality surgical care to patients who may otherwise have limited access to it."

Success Stories

A Second Chance to Breathe Freely

For this gentleman from a remote area of Multan, breathing and swallowing had become increasingly difficult due to a large thyroid swelling. The cost of surgery was beyond what he could afford.

He eventually attended Nishtar Medical University, where a visiting specialist team was providing thyroid surgery as part of IMRA's charitable surgical programme.

Working alongside local doctors, the team successfully performed his operation. This video was recorded just one day later.

For him, the operation meant being able to breathe and swallow more comfortably and return to his everyday life.

His story is a reminder that access to specialist healthcare should not depend on a person's ability to pay.

From Fear to Reassurance

For this lady, discovering a lump in her neck brought with it the fear that it could be cancerous. She was also worried about whether she could afford the treatment she might need.

She came to Nishtar Medical University, where she was assessed by the local team and given the opportunity to receive treatment through IMRA's charitable thyroid surgery programme involving local doctors and visiting specialist surgeons.

Following careful assessment, she underwent thyroid surgery. This video shows her during her recovery after the operation.

For her, the treatment meant more than an operation. It brought reassurance and hope at a time of considerable uncertainty.

Her story highlights the importance of access to specialist assessment and treatment, regardless of a patient's financial circumstances.
